A Shade Garden Design

This hidden gem is located in the Jordaan, a picturesque and charming district in the city centre of Amsterdam. The garden is on three sides enclosed with concrete and brick walls and receives only a few hours of direct sunlight each day.

Easy to maintain

To meet the wishes of the owners to create a garden that is more vivid with textured plants that do well in shade and are easy to maintain, I have worked with mainly evergreen plants that hardly need any maintenance but look great all year round.

Design Idea

I wanted to emphasize the feeling of a secret, almost forgotten garden where the old walls are reclaimed by nature. To achieve this abandoned effect we have planted evergreen ferns in the gaps of the old brick wall. We have also planted fragrant evergreen climbers such as Clematis armandii and Trachelospermum jasminoides to cover the concrete walls. To screen the neighbouring houses we worked with evergreen espalier trees. The existing evergreen bamboo is complemented with evergreen perennials such as Liriope muscari, Euphorbia robbiae and different hosta varieties.
